Ruidoso Downs Race Track & Casino sets in the Lincoln National Forest and near Rio Ruidoso. Opened in 1946 the track has been home to the most prestigious quarter horse race, the All American Futurity.
The All American Futurity debuted in 1959 with a filly called Galobar winning the race. Galobar who was trained by Newton Keck, owned by Hugh Huntley and jockeyed by now trainer Clifford Lambert, Sr. is the first of a list of house hold names.
The All American Futurity became the first world's richest race with a purse of $1 million in 1978. Now, the All American Futurity is the world's richest Quarter Horse race with a guaranteed $1 million to the winner and a total purse of over $2 million. The All American Futurity is first and oldest million dollar race in horse racing with it reaching $1 million in 1978 and was won by Moon Lark.
